A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending Be At Ease, a fundraiser for Dogs Helping Heroes. I wasn't super familiar with the organization at the time, but liked the premise: service dogs for veterans.
At the event, I got to meet Polar Bear and his veteran. Polar Bear's hero is now comfortable enough to go on stage and talk to a crowd, with Polar Bear by his side. I looked around and saw all these veterans, true heroes that had served our country, with their service dogs and got the chills. A tall gentleman kept reaching over and caressing his large dog's right ear - the dog leaned in to him and the man visibly calmed down. After the presentation, the man leaned over and nuzzled the dog. The pure joy and love between the two made my heart burst.
Dogs Helping Heroes uses rescue dogs! They train the dogs to serve veterans, wounded first responders, and Gold Star Families. I know the power of dogs love - I know how it has transformed my life. That is why this year for my birthday and Christmas, I am asking for donations to help me buy a service dog for a Hero.
You can help by donating: https://www.facebook.com/donate/1970156283002529/
I used the Facebook platform because it takes no fee from the nonprofits AND the individual donors get the tax credit - if you are not on Facebook please contact me if you would like to donate and I will make it happen!
Let's get a service dog (and name it Nelson or Waylon!) for a Hero!
