Last weekend (one week ago today to be exact!) I was fortunate enough to get to go to the Florida Derby with my parents and BFF Courtney. My dad is in on one of the syndicates that owns a part of the horse Audible, who we were hoping would run well enough to cement a spot in the Kentucky Derby.
I've been to many race tracks, but Gulfstream is one of my favorites. What isn't to like about the south Florida gem? Warm weather, a pretty track, palm trees, friendly people, and good racing.
An excellent surprise came in the form of Bella, of Bella of Louisville fame. She and her husband are now part of the syndicate. You know those people that you have known from afar and then you really talk to them and think, "Dangit. Why haven't we hung out more?!" That's Bella. She's an entrepreneurial maven and all around nice lady. It was so much fun to get to catch up and chat with her! Bella, Courtney, and I chatted all day about life and blogging and horses. We tried our hand at a Pick 6, and got a woeful 3 of 6. Ah, well! We can only get better!
John Velazquez is a personable jockey, coming to greet all the owners he could giving out handshakes and hugs. He took Audible on a heck of a ride, coming from near the back to win and make us all feel like we ran the race with Audible! We scrambled excitedly to the winners circle and tried fit in the picture!
Winning any race is an incredible high, but a race as big as the Florida Derby.. with all that it means.. A spot in the Kentucky Derby. Another chance at the Greatest Race. Chills.
We collected ourselves (somewhat..) and went back to the suite for champagne before a delicious dinner!
Horse racing. It is a crazy world, but there is nothing like it! Who else is pulling for Audible in Kentucky Derby 144?
