Perhaps it was the start of the Fall Meet at Churchill and the busyness that it promised looming large, but I LIVED IT UP from Thursday-Sunday. On Thursday night, I held my first OFFICIAL Scout & Cellar wine tasting for a few of my close friends. We had a lot of CLEAN-CRAFTED wine, but my overindulgence came in the form of cheese. And cheese pizza. Sigh. Carbs. HOW CAN I QUIT YOU?!?
Anyway, I didn’t feel the effects of the vino but I felt quite puffy on Friday morning. That didn’t stop me from enjoying the delicious spread at Emmie’s wedding - where I also imbibed in quite a bit of wine..
Saturday saw a Keeneland trip, that started with my clean-crafted wine, but as they don’t sell it at Keeneland, quickly devolved into hotdogs and cheap chardonnay.
As is my habit when I fall in love with something, I spouted the virtues of Scout & Cellar’s clean-crafted wine all weekend. And the topic of this post: natural deodorant.
I switched at the beginning of the summer, which in retrospect was a mistake. Let me tell you - NOW IS THE TIME TO TRY OUT NATURAL DEODORANT. It is getting cooler - I will explain why this is important.
I switched to natural deodorant because I fell for the slick ad campaign of Native Deodorant. I started with their lavender scent, which is my favorite. Let me tell you, when you switch.. you sweat more. After extensive googling, I have found this is a common side effect: verified by my unofficial poll of my friends Susan and Ashley who had also made the switch to natural deodorant. You sweat MORE when you first switch to natural deodorant. Let me state this again: YOU WILL SWEAT MORE and it will freak you out. Here’s why: aluminum in regular deodorant works by blocking your sweat glands. So when your pores are unblocked, your body is like WOOHOOOOOOOO SWEAT CITY!
You also SMELL TERRIBLE when you first switch. Again, I verified that this wasn’t in my head via Google, Ashley, and Susan. According to the gospel according to Google, it is because your body is literally detoxifying. The nasty crap thats been blocked in your armpits is now free to escape. How do you deal? APPLY MORE NATURAL DEODORANT. It really does help.
Full disclosure: I switched to Smarty Pits about a month in because my stupidly sensitive skin was having a rough time with the baking soda in the Native. I found a sensitive skin version with Smarty Pits and promptly bought the Lavender Rose and Eucalyptus Spearmint. I LOVE BOTH.
Another thing to expect, your lymph nodes in your armpits may swell. This happened, it was painful, and I was sure I had cancer. I turned to my trusty Google and found this happened during detoxification. I texted Susan and Ashley frantically, asking them if they had had this issue and sure enough, Ashley had (she and I both have super sensitive skin so this DOES NOT SURPRISE ME!).
About a month and a half in, my body seemed to settle. It got used to the natural deodorant. I wasn’t needing to reapply with my trusty travel stick every 5 hours. Again, full disclosure: this all coincided with my conscious effort to eat less crap. I have been eating more consciously. Why do I bring this up?
BECAUSE WHEN YOU EAT BETTER AND THEN EAT LIKE CRAP, YOUR BODY RESPONDS. Not only do you feel like crap, you SMELL LIKE CRAP. I sincerely apologize to all the women around me at bounce class on Sunday, you are the real MVPs in this situation. Despite the disgust I felt for myself, I have to admit - I am oddly proud that my body could so obviously purge the yuck I subjected it to this past weekend!
I highly suggest switching to natural deodorant, and NOW IS THE TIME. We are heading into cold weather and sweater season. Cold weather is naturally a good time to try out it out, since you DON’T SWEAT AS MUCH. And lets face it, SWEATERS ARE NATURAL SWEAT HIDERS!
